Today Jenny McAlpine Weddings joins us on the blog with her tips on hiring a wedding planner for your beautiful day. But first…why would you need a planner? As a wedding photographer I’ve seen all types of events. From opulent luxury affairs to cozy backyard receptions. It doesn’t seem to matter how many guests or details there are, weddings with a planner really stand out!
First, the bride’s family and friends are way happier. Instead of feeling the pressure to keep things running smooth, they kick back and relax.
Second, the bride is much more relaxed. She knows her schedule and details are in the hands of an expert, so she doesn’t waste time with worry.
Third, the photographers are way more efficient! Instead of playing liaison between family and the wedding party, pinning boutonnieres, helping carry items, or stressing over the schedule, they are free to photograph all day long. This means more images for you, and less moments missed.
A day of coordinator can provide many of the above services, but a full plan is SO much better. You don’t need to wonder if something got missed, stress over the decision on which vendor to hire, or communicate between everyone to develop your wedding day schedule. They do all this for you! From rentals to phone calls, from ideas to emotional support, your wedding planner has you covered. Plus did you know your planner can be a helpful tiebreaker aka “relationship SAVER”! Can’t agree on what you want? Trust your planner haha.
So how then will you find a planner who is right for you? Jenny McAlpine gives some awesome tips below.
Jenny’s 5 Tips for hiring a planner
Experience: What is their experience in wedding/event planning? It’s not always how long their business has been running and how many hundreds of weddings they’ve planned. Sometimes you may find that their previous work experience, their maturity, and their common sense make up for years of planning weddings.
Numbers: How many weddings (generally) do they take in a year, and is wedding planning their full time job? You want to ensure that your planner isn’t taking on more than they’re able, and then you could get lost in the mix!
Backup: What happens if they’re sick or break their leg and aren’t available on your wedding day? Do they have a qualified, experienced, trustworthy person/people that can pick things up where they were left off and ensure your big day goes flawlessly?
Style: Does your planner have a specific style? It’s all very well if your wedding planner does a specific style of wedding, but is that what you’re looking for? Or will your planner work with you to create a style and develop a theme that is just what you and your fiancé envision?
Connection: Do you like them? You’re likely going to work with your wedding planner for the best part of a year (or longer), and they’re going to be your sounding board, your connecter, your negotiator, your confidant, your cheerleader, and sometimes even your mediator. It’s really important that the three of you are a fit and have mutual respect for each other. Also they need to be compassionate, a good listener, and highly organized.
