THE REALITIES OF PLANNING YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING, by Joy McGinnis
You’re engaged! You’re high on love and can’t stop looking at your sparkly engagement ring. Quickly and inevitably the well meaning questions begin. Where? When? Who? Overwhelmed with details and pressure you look at your love and say “Let’s combine the wedding with the honeymoon! It’ll be so much easier.”
Destination weddings continue to be a strong travel trend. The concept of running away and getting married in a tropical destination just seems so much easier and less expensive, especially if family is flung far and wide. However there are realities to be dealt with.
Not Everyone Will Be Happy With A Destination Wedding
Be prepared for some push back from family members. You may be accused of being selfish and not considerate of your older relatives who can’t or won’t make the trip. Sadly guilt is a tool often used to pressure the wedding couple into conforming to the status quo.
Base Your Choice On Your Budget – Not Your Guest’s
It’s your wedding and if you want to go all out go ahead. If you try to make everyone happy you inevitably disappoint all. Don’t apologise for your choice. Attendance is not mandatory and every guest makes their own decision.
Pick a Destination and a Date Well In Advance
Don’t spring a destination wedding on your family! Give them time to get used to the idea and save up for the big day. Attendance will be better and details ironed out well in advance.
Verify That You Can Be Legally Married in Your Destination of Choice!
Every country has specific requirements of the wedding couple prior to getting legally married. Until recently for example, a foreigner could not be legally married in Tahiti – the #1 Honeymoon destination! Ceremonial wedding ceremonies were conducted but they were not legally binding marriage contracts.
Find A Travel Consultant Who Specializes in Wedding Groups
A professional travel expert will help you choose the destination that’s perfect for your personal expectations and budget. They will determine marriage requirements and advise on ways to make things go smoothly. They will negotiate on your behalf to get your wedding group the best value and inclusions. They will look after the details and concerns of each individual guest so that the wedding couple is free to focus on the wedding planning itself.
Destination weddings can be truly wonderful. They allow for a week long nuptial celebration with family and friends. Lifelong memories to be shared with those you love. Be prepared, be relaxed and be married where and how you want!
